“Love Notes” – Dallas Wedding Vendor Spotlight

What can we say about Marty and  Love Notes,  we love working with Marty, he has a incredible staff.  We love it when we find out we are going to work with Love Notes they truly are the best in the business. And  since its more then just a business to him and his staff you know you are going to have a wonderful ceremony. One that you will remember for ever.   ”Love Notes ” is the only ones that we refer to  that is just how great we think they are.  We love working with Marty and  all of  the officiants at Love Notes.

How far in advance should  you book your officiant for your wedding?

You can never book your Minister / Officiant too early.  He or she is the one person you must have. You really only have to have 3 things for a wedding-the couple, the license and the Minister. If there is no minister, there is no wedding.  The Minister sets the tone for the ceremony and the ceremony sets the tone for the rest of the day’s festivities.  If your ceremony is a wonderful experience, then most likely, your reception will be a happy and fabulous event, too.  However, if the Minister / Officiant you choose shows up late, is not engaged in the moment (seems aloof or distracted), calls the bride or groom by the wrong name, has his nose in his book constantly, goes off on some tangent, is not warm and personable, etc., then everyone leaves the ceremony with “a bad taste in their mouths.”  The photographer will have a harder time getting a good picture because everyone is upset with how the ceremony went.  The DJ will have a more difficult time putting everyone in a “party spirit” because the guests are focused on how bad the ceremony was.  If you wait till the last minute to secure your Minister / Officiant, you might not have the kind of ceremony you always envisioned, one that fits you and tells your love story.
How long have you been in the “Love”  business?

I have been in the “Love” business for 39 years and have “loved” every minute.  Every year I learn something new about the industry and hope to continue to grow with it. I hope they still call me “Minister Marty, the Marryin’ Man” when I’m a hundred!

What got you interested in working in the wedding industry?

When I graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary, I became a “singles” pastor.  Our singles group had hundreds of singles coming every sunday.  Needless to say, boy would meet girl and they would fall in love and want to get married. So I was virtually officiating weddings every weekend.  After 10 years as singles pastor I was put in the position of worship leader and associate pastor of my church.  Even though I was in this new position, I was the “go to guy” for weddings, which I loved.  Then I retired from the church but did not want to retire from “the ministry.”   My sweetheart, Carol Sage, asked me what I enjoyed most about the ministry.  I told her that I really loved the 10 years I was with the Singles Class – seeing people fall in love and want to get married and being invited to share in that special moment in a couple’s lives. Carol said, “OK, put an ad in this little book”.  She held up the little Wedding Wishes Planner and Directory.  And so I did (almost 20 years ago now).  I got one call, and then another call and another until I was booked all the time. So I had to hire another minister, and another, etc. We now have 16 ministers on the LoveNotes staff.

What type of clients do you find yourself most working with?

I have had the joy of marrying all kinds of people. You see, love knows no boundaries. They are rich, poor, famous, unknown, all shapes and sizes, various cultural backgrounds, various religious heritages, inter-racial, inter-cultural, inter-denominational, etc.  Just two people who fell in love and wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. And how blessed I am that they invited me to share in the most important day in their lives.
What do you love the most about the wedding business?

It’s hard to limit it to one thing but I would have to say I love the people I have met that are in the wedding industry. I have developed some wonderful relationships with other wedding professionals. People who become vendors in the wedding business are truly special.  To be involved in this business, you have to have a certain kind of spirit, heart and attitude.  If you don’t, then you won’t survive in this industry.  It’s a stressful business and everyone has a role to play. We’re a team. Every facet of the wedding day is important and every vendor plays an extremely vital roll to make sure all the pieces of the puzzle come together so the bride will have the wedding of her dreams. And I get to start it off. That’s why I take my job so seriously.  I know if I tell the couples “love story” the way they want it told, and tell it in such a way that it is memorable, then the day is off to a good start.  My goal is to give the couple “a day to remember, not a nightmare to forget”.

I also love the fact that I get to meet couples who are excited about life and love. To be invited to  “tie the knot” and share in that special moment with them is truly an honor for me. I consider it a sacred trust. I know it is a scary thought for a couple to invite a stranger to be a part of the most important day of their lives.  But I am committed to making a couple feel secure, safe, comfortable and confident with my role as their wedding Minister/Officiant. Bottom line, I love the relationships!

What kind of trends are you seeing  this year when it comes to ceremonies?

When it comes to ceremonies, I see more and more couples wanting to make their ceremony more personal.  They don’t want a “cookie cutter” ceremony.  Couples are putting more emphasis on making their ceremony reflect their journey of love.  They are giving more input on the words they want spoken during their wedding ceremony. That is why we wrote the book “A Wedding Ceremony to Remember,” so couples could choose the perfect words for the perfect wedding and design their ceremony exactly as they wish.

What was your wedding like?

Wow!  That’s the word that comes to mind.  When I saw my sweetheart coming down the aisle – yup that’s the word – Wow!  That’s still the word that comes to mind when I see her each and every day.  Our wedding was in our back yard.  We had a gathering of family and friends who came from all over the country.  As a surprise, I flew in one of Carol’s best friends from Iowa to sing and she was so overwhelmed with joy she burst into tears.  Carol wrote and sang a song to me, “Now, Forever, and Always.”  She is a fabulous musician. We all blubbered like babies!  For the most part, it was a simple fairy tale wedding.  We danced, yes danced in our garden shoes.  I took ballroom dancing for many years as a young man. . . can still cut a rug I might add. :)   It was truly a joyous occasion getting married to my best friend. When I asked her why she wanted to marry me, she replied, “Well, somebody had to, it may as well be me!” And then she smiled that wicked little smile that captured my heart. Lots of wonderful memories, but the saddest part for Carol and me is that we have no professional pictures of our wedding day because our wedding photographer never gave us our pictures. And after years of trying to get them from him, we have all but given up. And so a warning to all brides, make sure you do your research on your wedding photographer or you’ll have empty frames on your walls like we do. (Carol says that’s to remind her that she is not through with him yet! Look out!)

Tell us about your business where you are located, how to reach you?

LoveNotes-DFW Clergy Services is a business that allows us to have a ministry to people who don’t have a connection to a church or know a minister, priest, rabbi or judge to perform services for their special event. Although weddings make up about 85% of our business, we perform other ministerial services as well such as funerals / memorial services, baptisms, blessings, baby dedications, quinceaneras, vow renewals, etc. We now have 16 ministers from various backgrounds on our staff. We are all trained the exact same way so we are interchangeable in case of emergency or scheduling conflicts.  Our 16 ministers live all over the metroplex. We officiate weddings throughout the DFW metroplex and to Sherman, Weatherford, Waxahachie, etc. We operate our business out of our home in Sachse. (We live downstairs and work upstairs.) As I mentioned earlier, I have been officiating weddings for 39 years, but LoveNotes, as an organization, has been in business since 1990.  Carol actually began LoveNotes as a music business and then we added the ministerial services shortly thereafter. You can reach us at lovenotesweddings@earthlink.net or at 972-647-9580 / 817-917-5540 or visit our website at www.lovenotesweddings.com. We are excited to be opening an online store shortly called Love Notes Lane (lovenoteslane.com), which will offer items for all types of ceremonies. So take a stroll down Love Notes Lane, your pathway to memorable moments!

Vendor Spotlight – About Face Artistry

I’m so happy to feature this months vendor spotlight About Face Artistry! Focusing on Randee  an extraordinary Make up artist here in the Dallas Fort Worth area. I feel like I’ve known her forever she is just that kind of person.

Thanks Randee for taking the time  to do this for us.

How long have you been in the business of making people gorgeous?

I’ve been in the industry for over 12 years now and I started my own company, About Face Artistry, five years ago. I loved working for great lines like MAC, but working for a line is more about selling products. I really wanted to focus on each individual client’s needs and what they really desired.  I felt it should be about the whole experience, not just making women look great, but I wanted them to feel great too!

What got you interested in working in the wedding industry?

I had worked with celebrities, and had done makeup for television, stage, pageants, and advertisements, pretty much every medium, but on-location bridal makeup seemed to be in high demand, and there really weren’t many professional artists fulfilling this need. I knew I could offer the entire experience of applying specialty makeup that would last, using quality products, and doing it at the client’s location so it was relaxing and convenient for her.

I basically wanted to give my client’s what I would look for in an artist, and that is obviously someone with talent and technical knowledge when it comes to the art of beauty and makeup.  But, the most important ingredient is someone who listens to what the bride wants. Brides are special clients, and it takes the perfect blend of artistic talent, technical skills, psychology, and personality to specialize in wedding makeup.

I am easy going and honest, I am here to show each woman what is going to look best for her features, also taking into account her personal preferences.  This is all about her, not what I want or what I am trying to sell or what the latest trends are, this is about the bride. Yes, I need to be able to incorporate things that as a professional I know will enhance her beauty, but I also listen very well.  I am not a diva, so my clients can ask me to make changes without a fight!

What type of clients do you find yourself most working with?

I typically have two types of clients; the first would be all of my teachers, nurses, and ladies who love soft, natural, clean makeup. The art of creating a “no makeup” look requires great skill in order to give her the appearance of a natural and radiant look. Lots of women choose me because I understand how to give them a “better version” of themselves. For these women, who typically wear little or no makeup on a daily basis, it is important to balance the makeup so it looks great in photos, but is not too heavy in person.  The bride is going to be meeting many of the groom’s friends and family for the very first time, and it is very important that she feels like herself, while also looking fabulous in the wedding video and photos.

Then, I have my “makeup divas” – these ladies love their cosmetics and know how to use them! These clients are confident with applying their own makeup on a daily basis, but they typically don’t have a thorough understanding of how the products will appear in photographs. Lots of cosmetics look fine in person, but they look awful in photographs. This is why it is so important to hire a professional with extensive product knowledge and experience in color and contouring.

You’ll find that the really great makeup artists have lots of “tricks of the trade” to help your makeup application last. These include special products and application techniques that come only with specialized training and years of experience. For a bride, this is one of the most photographed events of her entire life, so you want an artist that uses quality products and techniques that will keep you tear-proof and fresh all night long!

What do you love the most about the wedding business??

Love! I mean come on, what isn’t exciting about someone getting married?! I love knowing that someone has chosen me to be a part of this very special time in their life, and to see their smiling face when I am finished is very rewarding.  To make someone not only look great, but feel great, is the ultimate satisfaction for me.  Seeing my clients face when I’m through and hearing the people that love her “ooh” and “ahhh” is just such a beautiful thing! I love getting my clients excited about their wedding and making their vision a reality.

If you didn’t do makeup for a living what would you be doing instead?

Hmm?  I love music, so maybe a D.J.  I also love to make people laugh, so maybe a comedian. No, come on, I would still TOTALLY be a makeup artist, who am I kidding! I would still be Randee who brings music and makes you laugh while she does your makeup! Ha! Ha!

What is the craziest wedding experience you’ve ever had?

Several stories, but here is an interesting one . . . I had a “high strung”, nervous bride who apparently wasn’t crazy about the hairstylist she had just come from on the day of her wedding. She didn’t look bad, but the hairstylist wasn’t very nice to her and the bride wasn’t particularly jazzed about the final results, besides the fact that she didn’t want to be late for her own wedding. Everyone except for the bride was at the church and I had finished all of her bridesmaid’s makeup and was ready for her.  The bride, obviously flustered and upset, finally arrived in the bride’s room at the church and immediately one of the bridesmaids made a derogatory comment about having to wear her (ugly) dress and the bride lost it.  She was hyperventilating and got down on all fours, someone handed her a paper bag and it was apparent to me that no one was bold enough to try and calm her down.  I got down on my knees and gently rubbed her shoulder.  I asked her very calmly if she loved her groom-to-be and she said yes.  I then asked her if he loved her, again, yes was the reply.  I told her that despite all of the crazy “little” things that go wrong, today should be the happiest day of her life.  I asked her if she agreed, she said yes.  I then slowly looked in her eyes and asked her if she was excited about getting married to a man that she loves and that she knows loves her.  Yes, she said. So I smiled ever so gently and said, “Sweet girl, then why are you breathing into a bag down on the ground on all fours?”  We all laughed and I got her up into the chair and gave her the best makeup of her life.  She was so happy, and everyone else was so glad that she was okay, and the wedding was amazing.  Yes, she is still happily married!  I even ran into one of her bridesmaids at another wedding years later and we laughed about the situation.  She said, “Oh my gosh! I remember you, you saved my cousin’s wedding!”

What is the best wedding experience you’ve ever had?

Well wouldn’t I have to be crazy to not say that MY wedding was the best experience?! Ha! Ha!  I mean it’s the one time you get to make it what you want it to be!

I have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of wedding parties and they are all so different and fun.  Each bride is special and no two faces are the same, so what is not to love about each new experience?!

What is your inspiration?

People inspire me! You know, beauty is a gift from God – everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it. I have learned that I can have a positive influence on others by helping them feel better about themselves. When your makeup looks great, it gives you confidence, so I love making people feel fabulous on the outside to give them the confidence to let their inner beauty show through. Nothing is more beautiful than when your client’s eyes light up as she looks in the mirror at herself and you can tell she feels beautiful!

Why do your clients choose you over some of your competitors?

I am very fortunate because I truly love what I do and my client’s see that.  If you read any of my bride’s reviews or talk to any vendors that know me or have worked with me, you will see I am consistent.  I show up on time, I listen, and I have not only the talent, but the passion that makes me do my best for you!  I realize that this isn’t just a party, this is YOUR WEDDING!

I personally think that really understanding who my client is and what overall look she is trying to convey is so important! Actually listening to the client and building a rapport is key. Talent and skill are only part of what I offer, a client should also like who they are working with and feel comfortable with the people they choose to be a part of the wedding process.  Brides spend a lot of time with their hair and makeup artists, and I want them to know they can count on me to make them look the most beautiful they have ever felt, as well as someone they can count on to show up.

One of the characteristics my clients often tell me they love about working with me is that I get THEM excited about their wedding, and that I helped them stay calm and have fun while getting ready for bridals or the day of the wedding.  This, to me, is what it’s all about! Not only do I use the best professional products, but I offer the most superior customer service too. Bottom line, I care about YOU!

What is the best piece of advice you can offer a bride on their wedding day?

I think that brides that are looking for a “deal” learn the hard way.  There are a lot of choices you have to make for your wedding and sometimes you have to cut back in certain areas, but looking your best should not be one of them.  You pay all that money for a beautiful dress, your veil, and an amazing photographer, why on earth wouldn’t you invest in a reputable, professional makeup artist?  Your photographs are the one thing you can’t change, so do it right and don’t regret it later. Plus, remember amazing makeup done by a professional is much cheaper than hours of Photoshop, and its waterproof too!

Now, tell us about your business?

At About Face Artistry, I offer on-location and in-studio services. I primarily use M.A.C Cosmetics for the most superior staying power, as well as additional professional products to ensure long-lasting, tear-proof results throughout the night. There are hundreds of colors to choose from, as well as a wide variety of products for all skin types, age groups, and ethnic backgrounds.  You are not only going to love the way you look in your photographs, but you will also feel beautiful and never cakey, a better version of you!

I love my career and giving my client’s the very best service, so last year I took time off and moved to NYC, in Manhattan, for three months to study updated makeup techniques. Makeup is an ever changing world and I feel it is part of every great makeup artist’s job and responsibility to be “in the know”. Continued education and training keeps you on top. I was lucky enough to study with some incredible celebrity artists and really get the inside scoop on lots of new and exciting products and techniques. New York is the fashion capital, so I figured what better place to tap into the brilliant minds of many successful artists there. Most wedding videographers are switching over to HD (High Definition) so it is important for me to be on my game since I specialize in wedding makeup. I stay busy providing my clients with the most current, beautiful makeup techniques and of course, I always offer the most superior customer service!

And a few irrelevant questions that we just had to ask:

What do you love to do when you’re not working a wedding?

I like to play with my daughter Daisy (my Pomeranian) and hang out with friends and family.  I love jamming out on the guitar on Rockband or Guitar Hero.  I also like to watch movies and in the summer go swimming.  I love being outside when it is warm!

Favorite color?

You know asking a makeup artist this is kind of like a trick question, because I love all colors.  Overall, I guess hot pink & black with a splash of lime green would be as narrow as it gets. Ha! Ha! I do also love yellow right now, definitely smitten with yellow!  Obviously depending on what the color is going to be used for can make a difference in my answer too.  Don’t worry ladies, I am not going to put lime green eye makeup on you for your wedding day! Ha! Ha!

Favorite flower?

I am a sucker for flowers! I loooove flowers, but especially Gerber daisies!  They are just so vibrant and happy, I mean seriously, who doesn’t love a big bunch of beautiful Gerber daisies?

Favorite food?

Mexican food, seafood, sushi, sweets . . . yum!

There are a million  reasons for  hiring a wedding consultant.  What do you think the most important reason to hire a planner is?
So the bride, groom and their families can enjoy the day as opposed to having concerns as to whether or not all the details they worked so hard on will turn out like they want them to.

How long have you been in the  wedding business?
I have been in the business for 15 crazy years!  In addition to being a Wedding Coordinator I’ve spent time at several locations (mainly private clubs and hotels) as a Catering Manager and Food and Beverage Director and throughout all my time in the hospitality industry I could never let go of the weddings.
What got you interested in working in the wedding industry?
Right out of college, my first position was a Catering Director for a private city club in downtown Dallas.  That was my first taste of weddings and I fell in love!  They are such happy times for people that it makes the events very exciting and enjoyable to be a part of.  It is also gives me an opportunity to be very creative, which is great!
What type of clients do you find yourself most working with?
Hmmm . . . I can’t really fit any clients into a specific type.  Right now I’m working with mother of brides, brides, mother of grooms, brides and grooms together, and all age ranges, from early 20′s to mid-50′s.  I’ve got clients now that I’m just working with on their ceremonies and then other clients that I’m taking care of everything from selecting vendors to sending out invitations and tracking rsvps – I’m all over the board!!

What do you love the most about the wedding business?
I absolutely love that I have a chance to be creative and work with someone to put together a very special event that will be unlike any other.

What is your favorite part of the wedding planning process?
Working with the clients to come up with the special touches that make their wedding different and special.  For example, a groom I’m working with now is a firefigher, so we are working to get permission for them to exit the reception on a firetruck!  Or another couple who’s wedding is coming up soon are totally changing the typical order of their reception to accomodate the antique car they will arrive in ( a petal toss for arrival of the bride and groom vs. the leaving) and a wonderful balcony for bouquet and garter toss (these events will happen first so the sun will still be out and guests can see and appreciate the event).
What is your favorite part of the wedding day?
When the event is over and the bride, groom and families are absolutely thrilled that everything went exactly according to plan (as far as they know!)
.
What was your wedding like?
I loved my wedding!  I was the Wedding Coordinator for Gaylord Texan Resort at the time, so it was a natural to have it there where I knew everyone and could be confident that everything would go according to MY plan!  I pretty much moved into the Resort on the Wednesday prior to our wedding and then lived like a queen for the next few days before the wedding on Saturday.
We were married in the summer (August!) and so having the ceremony in the atrium of the Resort I got to have a ceremony in an outdoor setting without all of the negatives.  Our color scheme was orange and navy blue with white accents, which everyone thought would look odd, but it turned out fantastic!  We had a late ceremony (8:00pm) and then had a dessert reception following with all kinds of great petite fours, mini dessert shots, cupcakes and a few savory items to tone down the sweets.  Oh!  andI have to mention our invitations!  My husband is a software developer and so very involoved with technology/computers so I put together a DVD invitation with music that showed photos of us riding bikes (another of my husband’s passions), before we met, etc.  They were a big hit, and the music that was on the DVD was used throughout the wedding – very cutsie!

What are some of the trends that you are seeing this season?
I don’t know that these are “trends” exactly, but things I’ve noticed that are changing . . . gray seems to becoming the new chocolate brown, bridesmaids dresses aren’t as formal (or long) as they have been, the entire wedding party is not being announced at the reception nearly as much, bouquet and garter toss seems to be going to the wayside.

What do you love to do when your not working a wedding?
Hanging out with my 2 sons and my husband just relaxing and spending time together – it doesn’t get any better than that!

Tell us about your business “The Organized Event”?
I have owned my own business, The Organized Event, since December of 2007.  I made the decision to leave Gaylord Texan Resort and go out on my own after my 2nd son was born and it has been a wonderful decision.  The opportunities to be creative and work in a varity of settings has been very challenging and rewarding.  I assist with wedding planning from just working on the ceremony to full event planning and coordination including assistance in every aspect of the wedding including the parties prior to the wedding, rehearsal dinner and brunch the next day.  I also really enjoy designing and putting together save-the-dates/invitations/programs, etc. (all of the fun paper stuff) and so that is a large part of my business as well.  (it’s that creative thing again!)

Thanks Shanna for  sharing  your thoughts with us!
